The Talking Drum Speaks: Rhythm as Language

The Talking Drum Speaks: Rhythm as Language

The talking drum earns its name. In the right hands it doesn't just keep time — it bends and speaks, imitating the tones of the human voice until the rhythm itself becomes a sentence. Alongside the sèkèrè and live chant, it turns a performance into a conversation between the stage and the crowd.

That conversation is the whole point. Participation is central to how I work: rather than treating audiences as spectators, I invite them in, and their voices and reactions influence what happens next. A drum call goes out, a response comes back, and suddenly the performance belongs to everyone in the room, not just the person holding the instrument.

This is what keeps the work immediate and accessible no matter where I am. You don't need to speak the language of the drum to feel it answer you. That's the beauty of rhythm as language — it reaches people before words do, and it fills every room it lands in with energy.
